Farhan Akhtar - the better director/actor/singer?
10 years back, the son of a renowned lyricist, made his entry into the industry that respected his father immensely. He created cinema like nobody else had. The songs of the film was a rage (it still is to a large extent) and the characters were complex yet related to every person who saw it. A new genre of cinema had arrived and along with it saw the arrival of the multi talented Farhan Akhtar. It would be wrong to say that he was a one film wonder. Dil Chahta Hai, though had a very ordinary storyline from the onset about 3 friends, it was the way it was weaved that made it successful. His second movie "Lakshya" though not a box office hit, inspired the youth to have a goal in life (I have a relative who is a Lieutenant today because of this movie). And later, he came out with the original remake of "Don". I use the word 'original' and 'remake' together because this man created the movie, the way it would have been made, had Chandra Barot (the director of the original) decided to make the movie in this day and age.
When the audiences/industry were beginning to applaud the directorial skills of the man, he surprised everybody by making his entry into acting and singing! Rock On - the movie that saw Farhan Akhtar in a never before avatar and an avatar that was hugely accepted. The movie was a box office hit and the songs became the anthem among the youth. The movie had Akhtar singing songs that ranged from rock to love ballads. A raspy voice, that was often called the male version of Rani Mukherjee, became the most sought after voice in the music industry. His second and third movie as an actor, "Luck By Chance" and the recently released "Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara" (both directed by his sister Zoya Akhtar) were box office successes too.
The best part about Farhan Akhtar the actor is that there are no pretensions neither is there an attempt to "look" convincing in a particular role. He just seems natural in all the characters he has played and those characters in turn instantly reaches out to the audience.
Farhan Akhtar, the director, the actor and the singer is extremely real and that I think is the reason behind his success. I can't seem to reach a conclusion here so let me put it out to you. Who do YOU think is better - Farhan Akhtar the director, actor or singer?
