Does a star's personal life affect his fan following and box office success?

I have always wondered if a star's personal life affects his fan following.

I was a huge Salman khan fan until the news of him running over a person sleeping on the foot path broke. This was followed by the Vivek Oberoi press conference and Ash claiming domestic abuse by Salman. For 2-3 years after that i swore i will not watch a Salman Khan movie and I did not. Not that I am an Ash fan, but i was very disturbed with the news of him running over a guy from the footpath.

Now i am back to loving Salman. I guess media has been reporting good news about him these days.

Similarly i saw a lot of comments against stars when they see them smoking, partying or even changing boyfriends.

My question is - has a star's personal life ever affected your liking for a star?. Also do you think that in turn can contribute to their box office success or failure?
