After treating the fans to a teaser and a handful of songs from the film, today, the makers of Kalank released the official trailer of the film and after watching the trailer of this period film which is set in the 1940's, just like all the zillion fans, even we are looking forward to watch Kalank. But while there is still time for the film to hit the theatres, we rounded up a list of Bollywood’s period films that have been loved by the audiences.

We can safely say that Bollywood is obsessed with period films as in the past, there have been a series of period films that have released and have been loved by the junta. And so, ahead of the release of Kalank, which happens to be 2019's biggest period drama film, we rounded up a list of period films released in India. From Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, to Devdas, Lagaan, The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, among others, take a look at India's period films.

Lagaan (2001)

Lagaan was one of the most popular films of the year, having been nominated for the Academy Awards. The film was set during the British Raj and was inspired by a real-life cricket match between the British and a group of villagers and the film starred Aamir Khan and Gracy Singh in the lead roles.

The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002)

Ajay Devgn’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh was based on the life of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh and the film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi and the film was set during the 1920's.

Pinjar (2003)

Pinjar was a period drama based on Amrita Pritam’s Punjabi novel of the same name and the film is directed by Chadraprakash Dwivedi.

Zubeidaa (2001)

2001 film Zubeidaa was a period drama directed by Shyam Benegal and written by Khalid Mohammed and it stars Karisma Kapoor, Rekha, Manoj Bajpayee, and Lillette Dubey in lead roles. The film is based on the life of ill-fated actress Zubeida Begum who married Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur.  

Padmaavat (2018)

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus Padmaavat was the biggest hit of Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor’s career and this period drama was based on the epic poem Padmavat by Malik Muhammad Jayasi.

Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s period drama titled Jodhaa Akbar was set during Akbar’s reign and chronicled the political dynamics of the era along with the love story between emperor Akbar and his wife Jodhabai.

Devdas (2002)

We all know of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s love for period dramas and one of Bhansali’s top-notch period film was Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s Devdas. The film is based on the novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

Parineeta (2005)

Parineeta is an adaptation of Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel of the same name and while Parineeta, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, is a love story set in old Calcutta.

Bajirao Mastani (2015)

Bajirao Mastani can safely be touted as the biggest period film of 2015 and it revolves around the story of Peshwa Bajirao and his love story with Mastani.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019)

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi had Kangana Ranaut essaying the role of Rani Laxmi Bai, and this period drama was co-directed by the actress and film-maker Krish Jagarlamudi. Within a few weeks, the film entered the 100 crore club and audiences have thoroughly loved the film.
