20 Years of Hero No.1! 5 reasons why the Govinda-Karisma Kapoor starrer was one of the best comedies in Bollywood
Here are 5 reasons why David Dhawan's Hero No. 1 starring Govinda and Karisma Kapoor is one of the best comedies made in Bollywood.
Twenty years ago, Govinda and David Dhawan were the comedy geniuses whose partnership created some of the funniest movies which made us laugh our hearts out even in 2017.
Add to that the amazing supporting cast like Kader Khan and Paresh Rawal along with Govinda's crackling chemistry with the one and only Karisma Kapoor and you get Hero No. 1.
This romantic comedy chronicled the life of Rajesh who falls in love with Meena and in order to win the trust of her family, disguises himself as a bawarchi (cook). Slowly he manages to win the hearts of all.
On the 20th anniversary of the movie we decided to pen down five reasons as to why we think Hero No. 1 is easily one of the best comedy films ever made in Bollywood:
1. Govinda

We can all agree that when we think of comedy, one of the first actors that come across our mind is Govinda. He has created a benchmark for all the current generation actors like Ranveer Singh and Varun Dhawan. In Hero No. 1 Chi Chi as Rajesh manages to play the rich kid who falls in love with Meena and completely transforms himself. It's not just the comedy bits that make us love him but it is also the tender moments between his character and the others that make us adore him.
2. The Comedy Genius - David Dhawan

No one can direct comedy like David Dhawan. His eye for making people laugh out loud literally is the true testament of his genius. The way the storyline mixes comedy, romance and a tinge of drama so organically and beautifully is commendable.
3. Govinda and Karisma Kapoor's chemistry

Govinda and Karisma Kapoor were one of the leading jodis in the 90's. Besides Raveena Tandon, Govinda had the best chemistry with Karisma and we love them even today. From their nok-jhok in the movie to them eventually reuniting, it's a treat to watch their characters fall in love.
4. The supporting cast (Kader Khan, Paresh Rawal, Satish Shah, Tiku Talsania, Shakti Kapoor, Rakesh Bedi and more

When you have a cast that includes acting geniuses like Kader Khan and Paresh Rawal, you are bound to have a superb film. Although Govinda and Karisma are the main leads, it's the supporting cast who make the movie even better.
5. The simplistic storyline, laugh out loud scenes and songs
The storyline was very simple and sweet for its time. It didn't have too much drama neither did it have crass humour that we are used to today.
Some memorable scenes in the movie include Rajesh's introduction of how he gets ready in the car before heading to a meeting with his dad, the confrontation between Kader and Paresh, Dialogues like, "Main tere pyaar mein kya kya na bana Meena, kabhi bana kutta, kabhi kamina," this movie surely had some hilarious quotes.
Songs like Maine Paidal Se Ja Raha Tha and Sona Kitna Sona Hai are sung even today.
We'll be rewatching the movie yet again. How about you?
