Loosely based on author's O.Henry's 1907 short story The Last Leaf, director Vikramditya Motwane's Lootera released in the year 2013. Set in the era of 1950, the film starred Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha in the key roles. The story revolved around a girl named Pakhi, an aristocrat's daughter, who falls in love with an archaeologist in 1953 Bengal. However, she does not know that he leads a double life and eventually ends up breaking her heart and devastating her.

The film was critically acclaimed for its soulful  music and the poignant, heartbreaking love story between Pakhi and Varun, which was flawed yet endearing. Today, 3 years of Lootera are completed and we bring you the 5 key reasons, why we simply can't get over the film:

Game Changer for Ranveer & Sonakshi

The film gave a new lease of life to these actors, who moving away from the run-of-the-mill roles, opted to go for a non-glamorous, restrained yet emotionally turbulent characters. Both Ranveer and Sonaskhi aced their parts with finesse, and received raving reviews from all quarters for their stellar act.

Music which grows with time

Lootera's music album by Amit Trivedi and lyricist Amitabh Bhattacharya was compared with ace musician, Late RD Burman's work. The songs were sublime, relaxed with melodious compositions as Sawaar Loon, Ankahee, Zindaaa. This album was hailed as Trivedi's one of the best works till date with Amitabh's poetic lyrics.

Director Vikramaditya Motwane

Vikram had tasted immense success with his first film, Udaan, which had swept major awards at the box-office. With Lootera, he set up the bar higher - further. Weaving a tragic-beautiful romantic tale, complementing the art of story telling, the film climax was the show-stealer. The filmmaker was praised for extracting soulful performances out of both Ranveer and Sonakshi in this period-romantic drama, who were known to be good in masala films genre until then.

A tragic love story

Lootera does not shove romance on your face. The crackling chemistry between Pakhi and Varun is subtle and natural. The film beautifully highlights the emotions caused by the experience of first love and the betrayal afterwards. The pain, angst, hurt is well-defined by a tragic, haunting climax.

An underrated classic

The film has a slow pace, which suits its narrative, but for many, it was not moving fast enough. However, here only lies the beauty of the storytelling. Ranveer's charm, Sonaksh's ethereal beauty complemented with strong cast of Barun Chanda, Divya Dutta, Adil Hussain, Arif Zakaria, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and especially, Vikrant Massey - Lootera was every bit fascinating.

Like a poetry, like wine, which gets better with years to come....Lootera.
