5 Reasons to Watch Aishwarya-Randeep Starrer Sarbjit This Weekend!
Director Omung Kumar is back with another intense biopic Sarbjit starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda which released today, May 20th.
In Sarbjit, Aishwarya plays a devoted sister pining for her imprisoned brother. Sarbjit also stars Randeep Hooda in the titular role, while Richa Chaddha essays the role of his wife. The film is based on the life of an Indian farmer, who was arrested and convicted on grounds of espionage by the Pakistani government.
We bring to you 5 Reasons why this film should be on your ‘To-Watch’ list this weekend.
Based on True Story

The film is based on true events; a story of an Indian national named Sarabjit Singh, an ordinary farmer caught in an unmarked area in Pakistan and was arrested by the Pakistani Police. Initially, Sarabjit Singh was charged with illegally crossing the India-Pakistan border. But later, he was wrongfully charged by the Pakistani police for the 1990 Faisalabad and Lahore terror blasts. They had mistaken him to be a RAW agent named Manjit Singh.
Sarabjit was condemned to death, and his sister Dalbir Kaur spent the next 23 years fighting for his release. Unfortunately, he could come back to India only post his demise.
The Star- Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

The ever-so-gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be seen in an ordinary look in the film, essaying the role of Dalbir Kaur, Sarabjit’s sister. Reportedly, when Omung Kumar approached Aishwarya for the role, it was an immediate yes on her behalf. In a previous interview, the actress had quoted, “It was a disturbing experience (to shoot the film), but as an actor, I feel honoured to be part of this film. I feel it’s some kind of a divine calling.”
Breaking the stereotype of ‘good-looking’ roles she has done in the past, the actress will be shown as a character who is aging throughout the film, which in itself will be a treat to watch along with her powerful acting.
The reel-life Sarabjit- Randeep Hooda

Undoubtedly, he is one of the best performers we have in B-Town. And Randeep’s transformation for the role is nothing less than shocking yet inspiring. For the ones who aren’t aware, Randeep had shed 18 kgs over a 20-day period and even grew a moustache. So much authenticity he has lent to his role, that even the real Dalbir Kaur has openly admitted how true Randeep has been to Sarbjit’s memory: “Randeep is excellent. He has played my brother perfectly. When I first came and saw Randeep, I saw my brother in him. He was in a cell when I saw him and I could not help but cry. I broke down.”
Going by the trailer this could be Randeep’s best performance of his career!
Soulful Music, Powerful Dialogues

A film is incomplete if two integral core strengths of a film- the music and dialogues, are not up to the mark. But Sarbjit holds the fort here. With a soulful music album and tracks like Salamat and Dard, the songs are beautifully penned, entailing all the emotions.
Then there are power-packed dialogues in the film, which are hard to miss. Like Richa Chadha, who plays Sarbjit’s wife, Sukhpreet, tells Aishwarya (in the trailer) “Aap ke liye jung hai, hamare liye intezaar hai,” (For you it’s a battle, for me it’s a long wait.)
Story Focussing on Human Interest

Despite the patriotic element of the story, director Omung Kumar has focused more on the human emotions of Sarbjit and his family. The film leans more towards a person who is stuck in the Pakistani prison and the political ups and downs between the two countries.
Backed with actors like Richa Chadha and Darshan Kumar in the ensemble cast, Sarbjit certainly is a story that deserves to be told.
Go, grab your tickets for the film right away. Happy weekend!
