What comes to your mind when we use the term Bollywood? Family melodramas and over-the-top romance, isn’t it? While we aren’t saying that we don’t enjoy Shah Rukh Khan spreading his arms for the love of his life; we can never can get enough of that, can we? But, this year is all about experimenting. Bollywood has become older and actors are no longer scared to move out of their comfort zone. Read on to find out which movies we’re talking about.

Airlift:

Airlift has been among the most successful movies of the year and it stars none other than Akshay Kumar in the lead role. However, what sets this movie apart is its story. 10 years back who would think that a movie based on Iraq’s invasion in Kuwait would do so well in Bollywood! But the story was so gripping that the movie was appreciated thoroughly!

Neerja:

Sonam Kapoor is known to do happy-go-lucky movies and she is usually perceived as a bubbly actress despite her stint in Raanjhanaa. So, when the actress was cast in Neerja as bravheart Neerja Bhanot, everyone was a little skeptical. However, when the movie released, all doubts were cleared and Sonam was appreciated for delivering a spectacular performance. Again, a woman-centric movie doing so well commercially was quite a shocker for everyone.

Fan:

Shah Rukh Khan – when this name is associated with a movie, it is bound to raise expectations. But, this time, breaking away from all the clichés possible, SRK chose a bold script and delivered an even bolder performance. A movie without any song and any lead actress – SRK took a gamble that paid off. He was seen in a double role, with one character being positive while the other was negative. Most people called Fan the return of SRK as an actor!

Kapoor & Sons:

When the first promo of Kapoor & Sons came out, the movie seemed like the usual Karan Johar family saga with two brothers fighting for the same girl. However, it was anything but that! It is about celebrating your imperfections. A hunky actor like Fawad Khan turned out to be a homosexual character in the movie and it was the first time that a leading actor had agreed to play homosexual on the big screen. More than 5 actors rejected Fawad’s role before he was approached for it. Also, Rishi Kapoor in the role of naughty dadu, was a complete knockout!

Ki and Ka:

Indian society asks for a man to work and earn bread for his family and calls a woman a homemaker. But, what happens if the roles are reversed? This is exactly what Ki and Ka showcased. R. Balki picked a story where a man (Arjun Kapoor) wanted to be a homemaker and his wife (Kareena Kapoor Khan) was the bread-earner in the family. Probably breaking the biggest cliché possible, the movie was certainly bold and beautiful!

Te3N:

The trailer of Te3n has just come out and it talks about a grandfather seeking revenge for his grandchild’s death a few years ago. The movie stars Amitabh Bachchan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Vidya Balan and deals with an extremely sensitive subject in a thriller format. Something that we haven’t seen before, for sure! Go watch the trailer, now!

Sultan:

Starring our most lovable Khan, Salman Khan, Sultan traces the story of a wrestler in Haryana. Anushka Sharma, who will be seen opposite Salman in the movie, is also playing the character of a wrestler. With a Haryanvi accent, Salman and Anushka will be seen in never-seen-before avatars and the teasers have already become a rage.

Madaari:

Irrfan Khan is known to do groundbreaking cinema and he is back with another one, Madaari. The movie is based on the Mumbai Metro bridge collapse in Marol. Irrfan has already impressed everyone in the first look of the movie and this thriller is surely going to be a riveting one!

Sarbjit:

Sarbjit stars the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Randeep Hooda and Richa Chaddha. The movie is based on prisoner Sarbjit’s tragic life and is narrated through a sister’s perspective. Aishwarya will be seen in a younger as well as older version of her, breaking away from her glamorous image. Randeep lost oodles of weight to play the character of Sarbjit.

Dangal:

Aamir Khan starrer Dangal is another movie which brings to light the story of wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat and his two daughter Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. The movie is all set to release in December and its enticing story has already caught the fancy of everyone's eye!
