‘I had accidentally slapped Sonam in the face,' shares Jim Sarbh
Slapgate cases on-and-off screens are not a new thing. But, imagine a newcomer slapping a lead actress. Do you remember the scene from Neerja in which one of the hijackers slaps Sonam Kapoor with a gun? In the scene, Jim Sarbh, who has essayed the character of Khaleel, had slapped the actress for real in the scene. Both Sonam and Jim were so much in the character, when the slap incident happened, that none of them came out of their characters or ended the shot. Instead, the actors continued to be in their roles and completed the sequence. Interesting, isn’t it?
For Jim, who debuted in Bollywood with Sonam Kapoor-starrer Neerja, this was the definitive moment. He was quite petrified after thrashing Sonam accidentally. But, he applauds the actress’ determination, as she didn’t throw any tantrums on this and continued to focus on her character in the sequence.Neerja, this was the definitive moment. He was quite petrified after thrashing Sonam accidentally. But, he applauds the actress’ determination, as she didn’t throw any tantrums on this and continued to focus on her character in the sequence.
Throwing more light on this, Jim said, “It was my first day of the shoot one of the first few days. We both were in our characters and then suddenly I realised that I have accidentally hit Sonam in the face with the gun in my hand. The scene was so natural and good that we have included that in the movie. After that, I was so petrified, as I was told not to slap her in the face. In the scene, I take the make-up and rub it on her face and turn to say something to the passengers. Then, I turn back again and the gun in my hand hits her face. But, then she didn’t stop acting, so I also continued to be in the character and eventually that turned out so well that we decided to use that scene in the movie.”
Jim was really moved by the way Sonam dealt with the situation. He further added, “Even though we weren’t interacting with each other, we were ready for whatever coming from us. If I pushed her and she pushed back and it got better and better. At that time, we hadn’t even interacted off screen with each other. At that time, we didn’t even need to be friends to bring that out of each other. But, now I like her very much and she is a great human being.”
After the incident, Jim wanted to apologise to Sonam but the director of the film, Ram Madhvani, stopped him from doing so. Telling how he apologized to the actress, he said, “We were on the set the next day. While crossing paths, our eyes met and through that I conveyed a sorry and blink. Sonam gave a cool, casual shrug and a smile. It was that simple.”
