Cricketers remember India's maiden World Cup win of 1983 on 36th anniversary
The Kapil Dev-led Indian team won the World Cup way back in 1983, which inspired many cricketers to take up the sport
Thirty six years after Team India won their maiden World Cup trophy, Indian cricketers - past and current - took to Twitter to remember the moment that changed the face of the sport in the nation forever. As Kapil Dev's men defeated the more fancied West Indian side, a generation of youngsters in India were inpired to take up cricket. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli have time and again stated how the win helped them take cricket seriously.
June 25, 1983 will forever be etched in the minds of fans and cricketers alike as it started a revolution in India.
Here are a few cricketers who voiced their opinion about that event.
"The day that started it all. Landmark moment in the history of Indian sports. June 25, 1983 -the day we were World Champions the first time. Kapil Paaji's valiant contributions, everyone contributing in their own way, but I think so much of Jimmy Paa, the MOM in semis & finals," former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag tweeted.
"25th June, a very significant day in Indian cricket history - India's first ever Test match in 1932 and also the day we won our first ever World Cup title in 1983, and the face of Indian cricket changed with this victory," former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman tweeted.
"These were the iconic scenes at Lords's #OnThisDay in 1983. Cricket was never the same in India after this. Thanks for Kapil's Devils for making impossible--Possible," former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra tweeted.

In the final, Team India scored only 183 runs after being put in to bat first. Krishnamachari Srikkanth top-scored with 38 runs and it seemed as if the target would be easily chased down. However, Madan Lal and Mohinder Amarnath took three wickets each to bundle out their rivals for 40 runs, handing India a 43-run win.
