Universal Boss Chris Gayle bid adieu to the World Cup as his side thumped Afghanistan by 23 runs at Leeds on Thursday. Confirming that the World Cup 2019 would be his last appearance on the biggest stage, after West Indies bowed out of the tournament with their second win, Gayle, who scored 7 and picked up a wicket with the ball, was privileged to have played five World Cups.

"We have a great bunch, it's for them to uplift West Indies cricket. I'll be around, I may be around for a few more games, will be there for the youngsters. World Cup wasn't to be but life does go on. It is my last World Cup....unless they give me two years of rest and I come back (laughs). Privileged to have been part of another World Cup. I don't intend to put my body on the risk, I've been struggling. This is the last one, definitely," said Gayle.

In 34 games across five World Cup, Gayle has scored 1186 runs at a strike rate of 90.53 and an average of 35.93. He also has 45 sixes, two centuries including one double hundred and 16 wickets to his name in the extravaganza.

"Been a privilege and honour to represent West Indies in five WCs, disappointed to end without making it to the final four. Lot has happened behind the scenes to get here and be here, that's fantastic.

"Would've loved to lift the trophy, but it didn't happen but at the same time it was fun, enjoyed it. All the guys rallied around me, got the support of the youngsters. Must commend the staff for the work ethics they've put in. Words can't explain my feeling at the moment honestly," added Gayle.

The player has announced his retirement from international cricket after the ODIs and T20Is against India later this year.
