On October 7, BTS became the youngest recipients of the prestigious  James A. Van Fleet Award from The Korea Society, which is awarded for contributions towards the promotion of US-Korea relations. "The Korea Society’s 2020 Annual Gala is especially meaningful, as this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korean War. We will always remember the history of pain that our two nations (Korea and US) shared together and the sacrifices of countless men and women," Bangtan leader RM had stated during BTS' acceptance speech, via Soompi.

However, RM's comment led to nationwide outrage by Chinese netizens who felt that the contributions made by China during the Korean war, in support of North Korea, were overlooked. Demands of ending BTS' commercial projects in China started making the rounds. Coming to the defence of BTS over the China controversy was Military Manpower Administration Commissioner Mo Jong-hwa who stated, "The fact that BTS mentioned Korea’s alliance with the US is an encouraging thing. Chinese netizens should be ashamed to talk about this issue," according to News1 Korea via Koreaboo.

"I think they are 100% wrong when they claim that BTS should’ve recognised the harm the allies of North Korea suffered as well," Jong-hwa added.
