The Lion King Day 1 Occupancy Report: The film gets the seventh best opening of the year
The 2019 remake of The Lion King released today and is looking to roar at the ticket windows with a big success on opening day
The Lion King is one of the most loved classics among animated films. Released in 1994, directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and produced by Don Hahn, the film follows the story of Simba, a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of the Pride Lands. However, Simba runs away when his evil uncle Scar murders Mufasa and manipulates Simba into thinking he’s responsible for his father’s death. Many years later, a grown-up Simba comes back to challenge Scar and becomes the rightful King.
A wave of excitement went through fans when Disney announced a photorealistic computer-animated remake of the classic. Directed and produced by Jon Favreau and written by Jeff Nathanson, The Lion King of 2019 stars the voices of Donald Glover as Simba and James Earl Jones as Mufasa, whereas the Hindi version of the film stars voices of Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan as Mufasa and his son Aryan Khan as Simba.
The film hit theatres today and had a good start with collections in the 30-35% range. In fact, it became the seventh best opening of the year. A report in Box Office India states: “This is a good result for Lion King as its a film where the target audience of kids and families will come on Saturday so it is sure to go up by a margin as the under 16 audience comes in numbers especially in the metros. The opening may be a little less than Spiderman - Far From Home but the first day can beat that film as this film can have better growth from late afternoon onward.”
