After much delay, Saif Ali Khan starrer Kaalakaandi has finally hit the screens and has got mixed reviews. The film opened on a dull note and has earned only INR 1 crore on Day 1. Kaalakaandi showcases three parallel tracks- a man who discovers he has terminal illness decides to let go of his principles; a woman involved in a hit-and-run seeks redemption and two goons must decide if they can trust each other.

About the film, Saif had earlier said, “When I was shooting for Rangoon, its director-writer Vishal Bhardwaj suggested that I read the script of Kaalakaandi. I liked the script which takes a very entertaining look at Mumbai. It offers an exciting story with a good arch for the lead actor. I play this man, who after finding out that he has stomach cancer, takes some ‘acid’ (a drug called lysergic acid diethylamide) and has the time of his life. By the end, his character undergoes a change.”

"The film is a cross-section of Mumbai with underworld goons, doomed bankers and idealistic lovers all mixed together in this karmic tale about love, crime and living a lifetime in one night!! I truly consider it to be one of my best films and am really forward to the release," added Saif.

Kaalakandi clashed with Mukkabaaz and the horror thriller 1921. While Mukkabaaz collected INR 75 lacs, 1921 minted INR 1.50 crore at the box office on its opening day. Talking about the clash, trade expert Akshaye Rathi had earlier told us, "None of them will bite into each other business as they are of different genre and at cinemas, we can offer something to every section of the social strata of the society and I expect a total of INR 6-7 cr on the first day from all these releases."
