Vidya Balan's Begum Jaan has been going all steady at the box office. Going by a report in a trade website, the film has earned INR 10.50 crore in its first weekend. The production numbers claim that the film has raked in INR 11.48 crore in three days of its release.

The film traces the lives of Vidya and the women living in her brothel in rural Punjab. Begum Jaan is a Hindi adaptation of director Srijit Mukherji’s Bengali film Rajkahini. Both Vidya and Gauhar Khan's stellar performance has become the backbone of the film.

In an interview with us, when we asked does box office numbers affect Vidya, she said, "Of course! But thankfully I am so selfish about being the actor part of me because I really feel blessed of living my dream of being an actor. So on set, I don't think about anything. Whether this film will work or whether the previous one didn't work. I just sink my teeth into the role and I thoroughly enjoy it."

She also added, "When my choices are right it is heartening. It boosts your confidence. I believed in something and that gets appreciated. You went ahead and did your best and now the world feels the same. That feeling is unparalleled. When a film does well commercially, it is a huge high!"

Considering the fact the film is counting on the shoulders of the leading ladies, Begum Jaan is doing an average business at the domestic market.

However, the fact remains that Begum Jaan is Vidya Balan’s all-time lowest opener. One can’t help but wonder, with such a performer like Vidya and good content like Begum Jaan, why would the movie witness such low numbers. This seems to be a classic case of marketing gone wrong and the result was little to no buzz in the opening weekend. Well in today’s time you just can’t leave it all to content, is it? Even super stars like Salman and Shahrukh, themselves work on elaborate plans to market their films now-a-days. Point here is a 360-degree promotional plan is essential for a movies success and that is exclusive of the star power or good content.

A good pre-release buzz is essential for any film and we have classic examples like Pink, where the movie went on to do well post a few days but couldn’t benefit the makers much as they really couldn’t negotiate on better distributor shares.
