Raees vs Kaabil: Here's how these 5 Republic Day releases fared at the box office!
For weeks now, movie buffs have been waiting to witness the clash between Shah Rukh Khan's Raees and Hrithik Roshan's Kaabil and the fans of both the stars have been vouching for their favourites. Gossipmongers, who are talking about this big clash on January 25, have termed it as a battle. The fate of a movie lies within the fact that how much does it earn at the box office and this decides whether it's a flop or a hit.
Tomorrow is the day when Raees and Kaabil will finally lock horns with each other. Both the films are eyeing on to get the benefit of the national holiday i.e January 26. Well, that's the strategy of the producers who choose to put their film onscreen around the Republic Day.
As a lot has already been said about how the films will fare at the domestic market, we decided to look back and check how much money the films from 2012 to 2016 (which released around this weekend) minted:
Agneepath (January 26, 2012)
With Hrithik Roshan reprising the role of Vijay Dinanath Chauhan and Sanjay Dutt playing the villain Kaancha Cheena, Agneepath shattered all records and got the benefit of a four day weekend. The film released on Thursday and collected INR 66.5 crore in its first weekend at the box office.
Race 2 (January 25, 2013)
Race 2, which is a sequel to hit film Race, surely made it huge with its collection at the domestic market. Revenge, romance, drama - Race 2 had all the elements of an entertainer and it did wonders in its first three days of release. The film earned INR 51.3 crore in its opening weekend (3 days).
Jai Ho (January 24, 2014)
Salman Khan's Jai Ho could earn well as his earlier films did in that phase, like Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2. Jai Ho got a normal three-day weekend and minted INR 60.68 crore.
Baby (January 23, 2015)
Baby stars Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Rana Daggubati and Taapse Pannu in the lead roles. The film earned a whopping INR 50.97 crore over a 4-day weekend as Republic Day on 2015 was on Monday.
Airlift (January 22, 2016)
Airlift, which was based on the India's biggest human evacuation, struck the patriotic chord with the audience. The film earned INR 44.30 crore in its three days its release. Airlift didn't really get the benefit of the Republic Day holiday but did wonders at the box office. The film earned INR 17.80 crore on January 26 that was Tuesday and it did reap the benefits of the holiday.
Now, Raees and Kaabil are releasing tomorrow and it'll be interesting to see how these films fare at their opening weekend.
