Australia vs South Africa, World Cup 2019: Proteas beat Australia; ensure India finish as table toppers
India finished on top of the points table after Australia lost to South Africa in the last league game of the World Cup 2019
South Africa and Australia, playing the last league game of the World Cup 2019, were involved in a nail-biter at Manchester. While defending champions, Australia, had already sealed their semis berth earlier, South Africa were playing for pride and wanted to end a dismal campaign on a high.
There was a lot at stake, however, in the game as Australia were eyeing a win to finish as the table toppers. The side that finished as the number two team after the league stages would meet England - the hosts, and a side that are in-form after two successive wins, while the table toppers would end up meeting New Zealand in the semis - a side coming on the back of three losses. India, had won their game to Sri Lanka earlier in the day, would have hoped that Australia lost their clash, so that the Men in Blue could top the tables and meet the Black Caps, a relatively weaker opponent.
That is exactly what happened. After the South Africans notched up 325 runs, led by Faf du Plessis' hundred, the Aussies responded brilliantly with David Warner getting a ton as well. However, regular wickets meant that the Kangaroos could not keep their momentum going, as they were all out for 315.
It was also the last game that JP Duminy and Imran Tahir played for South Africa.
India will now play New Zealand on July 9, while Australia will face England on July 11.
