Chetan Bhagat Loses It On Nach Baliye
Of all the misguided moves that fictioneer Chetan Bhagat has made ever since he entered Bollywood, judging a dance show was the clincher, the ultimate self-abuse tantamount to committing suicide on camera.
For one Chetan , whose success as a writer I respect, was way out of league as a judge of a dance show. You don’t ask an astrologer to judge a cookery show. Or a tabla player to judge a mandolin performance. Likewise, you don’t ask a writer to judge a dance show, unless he happens to be a dancer himself. The fault therefore lies with the Star channel, and the show’s producers Balajee Telefilms for pushing Mr Bhagat into frontiers that are alien to him.
Not that anyone held a gun to his head. The will to over-reach is entirely optional.
The final self-abuse was the dance at the grand finale. So ambitious in its design and such a colossal failure was the performance that a day after it was over the tweeterdom was still having fun at Mr Bhagat’s expense. It would take the star-writer a very long time to get over the dance performance.
Likewise, the television-watching public whose shock and disbelief at this grand display of self-ridicule would remain with them until maybe the next dance performance by chef Sanjeev Kapoor .
According to a very prominent filmmaker, the germs of self-ruination were inherent in Chetan Bhagat’s eagerness to enter Bollywood.
“He wanted to be part of showbiz at any cost. Once he got in, he tried to befriend the who’s who of the industry…Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor, Sajid Nadiadwala. His ultimate aim is to direct a film. But I don’t think that’s happening. In fact I suggest after 'Nach Baliye' he take a long break from the Hindi film industry. He should go back to doing what he is meant to.”
I tried to get Chetan Bhagat’s opinion on his dancing skills . But he chose not to comment.
