What are ESSENTIAL OILS? Do they really work?

Essential oils have been somewhat of a necessity for people who actually know of them. While people have their favourite essential oils, there is a whole other bunch who are not aware of the glory of essential oils. Lavender, tea tree, peppermint, rose, sandalwood are just some of these essential oils that can create wonders if used daily. But, what exactly are essential oils?

Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants. These oils extract the plant’s flavour and scent also known as the ‘essence’. These aromatic chemical compounds are extracted through a mechanical process called ‘cold pressing’. While these chemical compounds are extracted they become highly aromatic and concentrated in nature. Hence they need to be mixed with carrier oils like coconut, olive or almond. Essential oils are most commonly used in the practice of aromatherapy. They are either inhaled or diluted then rubbed on the skin.

Do they work?

Well, this is a most frequently asked question and the answer is - Yes, essential oils do work. Depending upon the plant that they are extracted from, each essential oil serves a different purpose. The chemicals in essential oils can interact with your body in a number of ways. While certain oils are inhaled, some of them are directly applied to the skin. The ones applied to the skin get slowly absorbed in the pores while working their magic. The oils that require inhaling the aromas from essential oils can stimulate areas of your limbic system, which is a part of your brain that plays a role in emotions, behaviours, sense of smell and long-term memory.

Apparently, there are more than 90 types of essential oils and according to Healthline, the following ones have proved to be the most popular. By the looks of it, each of these essential oils serves a distinct purpose.

Aromatherapy isn't the only use for essential oils. Apart from health uses, essential oils can be used to add a good scent to your homes or freshen up things like laundry.

While you are at it, you also need to understand that some essential oils can create problems or trigger some allergies. Nevertheless, they may cause some side effects like rashes, asthma attacks, headaches or any other allergic reactions. All you need to remember is that high-quality oils only use pure plant compounds extracted by distillation or cold pressing. Avoid oils that have been diluted with synthetic fragrances, chemicals or oils.
