Rihanna's Fenty Beauty pulls back a highlighter after complaints from fans around Japanese culture

Barely a week ago, Rihanna's make up brand Fenty Beauty rolled out a new summer collection which included a bronzer which came in eight shades, and three different shades of highlighter with quite catchy names such as Afternoon Snack, #PENNY4UTHOTS and Geisha Chic. Unfortunately, though, the brand had to pull out the last one from the market as fans felt that it fetishised Japanese culture.

The brand has a great rapport with its fans and followers on social media. The Instagram handle is full of fans participating in #FentyFaceFriday and their tweets also have cheeky responses to fans. So when fans found this offensive, the brand was quick to respond to them and promise a solution. A Reddit user opened up about how there was a discussion on the platform regarding the products. "Japanese American Redditors here said about the fetishisation of geishas in America and while it was possibly meant to be positive, it will definitely rub some people the wrong way because of the constant misuse and negative connotations associated with it in the western representation of geishas." The Redditor also appreciated how the brand was responding to the feedback quickly and were keen on changing the name, instead of making excuses.

Post the incident, Fenty Beauty has also taken full responsibility for the product and has wiped out all promotion of the highlighter from all social media accounts.

What are your thoughts on the brand's quick moves? Do you think the name of the highlighter was offensive in any sense?
