The fashion and beauty industry is facing a lot of scrutinies when it comes down to their designs. Over the past few months, a lot of designers have been called out by the infamous Instagram account Diet Sabya. From calling out blatant copies to cheap rip-offs, they have been keeping their eye out on everyone.
Just a few days ago, the Instagram account called out the Indian designer Masaba Gupta for her collaboration with Nykaa. According to the post, Masaba was accused of blatantly copying the packaging design of Sephora’s collection called Lip Stories.
“Is the @masabagupta x @mynykaa packaging a little too inspired by @sephora ‘Lip Stories’? Discuss!!” this is what the post’s caption read where they also gave a side to side comparison of the packaging.
This post was put out on July 24th, after which Masaba remained silent until yesterday when she posted an open letter addressing the accusations.
She started by saying that she started working on the beauty line back in 2017 and that the paper packaging used is "universally available" and "is neither patented by one or someone's innovation". The post further read, “The 12 prints you see on the Masaba by Nykaa packaging are all original House of Masaba prints. Some dating back to 2009 that some of you may remember. From then until now, which marks 10 years of my label - we have never been called out because the work we have done is absolutely original.”
She further started accusing whistleblowers (which we all know is Diet Sabya here) to call out half of Surat's printing industry, fabric shops in Bandra & Delhi Lajpat Nagar who copy her designs.
