SL vs NZ, World Cup 2019: Karunaratne 2nd player to carry the bat in World Cup history
Sri Lanka's Karunaratne added himself to the unique list after carrying his bat through against New Zealand
Sri Lanka were all out for 136 in the third match of the World Cup 2019 against New Zealand, but skipper Dimuth Karunaratne impressed as he remained unbeaten on 52. The player opened the innings with Lahiru Thirimanne batted till the end of the innings, and became only the second player to carry his bat through in a World Cup match.
West Indies' Ridley Jacobs was the first batsman to achieve this feat, when he carried his bat in the 1999 World Cup against Australia. In that game, Windies were bowled out for 110, and Jacobs remained unbeaten on 49.
Interestingly, Karunaratne was thought to be out when Mitchell Santner claimed to have caught him at deep-square leg. The umpires signalled him out, but the third umpire ruled otherwise and the skipper stayed unbeaten.
However, Lasith Malinga was dismissed on the very next ball, and Sri Lanka did not benefit much from the life that Karunaratne received.
