The first Warm up game of Sri Lanka and South Africa began with Sri Lanka winning the toss and opting to bowl first.

South Africa with its exceptional batting performance managed to put a respectable total of 338 against the Sri Lankans. Hashim Amla with 65 (61) and Faf Du Plessis with 88 (69) took complete responsibility of the team’s batting with Rassie van der Dussen who scored a decent 40 off 41 balls. The South African batsmen were all set from the start to boost up the batting lineup and they managed to build up a big partnership. Aiden Markram who scored 21 runs of 15 balls got out on the bowling of Suranga Lakmal and was caught by Kusal Perera. South Africa couldn’t have hoped for a better warm up match before the commencement of the big tournament. Eight out of the nine batsman surpassed double digit runs. Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep were the two most effective bowlers for Sri Lanka with 2 wickets each.

However, when it came to Sri Lanka’s batting, it collapsed after the fall of Angelo Mathews who managed to score a 64 off just 66 balls with a strike rate of 96.97. Dimuth Karunaratne was the highest run scorer for the team with 87 runs off 92 balls. The greatest positive note that the Proteas will take on from this warm up game is the form of Andile Phehlukwayo. Taking 4 wickets, he proved to be South Africa’s highest wicket taker with just 36 runs off 7 overs.

The rising fall of wickets for the Sri Lankan team resulted in their loss and South Africa won the match by 87 runs. This warm up game will further help the team in selecting the proper playing 11 for the official matches that commences on 30th May 2019.

The Proteas will play their second warm up match against West Indies in Bristol on May 26.
