Defeating the tournament’s favourites, Australia wins its first warm up match against England by 12 runs.

During the tournament, where every cricket expert was busy talking about the balanced side of the hosts and their impact in ODIs over the last few years, the Aussies came up as the underdogs to defeat the hosts in the warm up match at Rose Bowl Cricket ground on Saturday, June 25. The match started with England winning the toss and opting to bowl first.

In the first innings of the match, the Aussies managed to put across 297 runs after 50 overs. Their batting was dominated by Steve Smith, who made his comeback to International cricket in a flabbergasting way after a year of ban, post his ball tampering incident. Smith scored a smashing 116 runs off 102 balls that included 8 fours and 3 sixes with an astonishing strike rate of 113.73 before giving away his wicket to Tom Curren. Aaron Finch, who the Australian cricket Team pinned their hopes on, was caught after scoring just 14 runs. Apart from that, four players managed to put on a decent 30-plus score that included the likes of David Warner (43), Shaun Marsh (30), Usman Khawaja (31) and Alex Carey (30). For England, the plus side for their bowling will be the 4 wickets taken by Liam Plunkett to whom they can rely on for their upcoming matches.

The England team were all out for 285 runs with James Vince being the highest run getter for the team (64 off 76 balls). Jos Buttler’s 52 and Chris Woakes 40 along with the James’ batting kept the team’s hope high till the end. Despite being a warm up match, the victory against the hosts and number one ODI team will surely boost up the confidence for the Aussies before the big tournament.
