So far in Siya Ke Ram, we had seen all the kings from across the world arriving in Mithila to participate in Sita’s Swayamvar.

King Janak welcomes them all and ensures they feel at home in his palace. However, Ravan makes a show of his superiority and might soon after his arrival and whines about not getting a room big enough for his stature in Janak’s palace. He even visits the prayer hall to behold the mighty bow of Shiva and commands the Lord to make him lift the bow during Sita’s self-choice.

Soon after, the swayamvar begins in all its glory in a grand amphitheatre. Sita arrives with her mother, aunt and sisters looking like a moon amongst a cluster of stars. After bowing their head before Shiva’s bow, the ladies of Janak’s family take their seat.

One by one, the kings of Aryavarta get up to test their might by attempting to lift the powerful bow. However, no one succeeds in his attempt. When everyone go back to the pavilion disheartened and disappointed, Ravan makes a flamboyant entry to prove his worth. He begins by bragging about how powerful he is and how he shall soon fly away the bow to its real home – Lanka. He even goes to the extent of saying that he is not much interested in Sita, for all the rights have been bestowed by him on his favourite wife Mandodari. But, he adds that he still wants Sita to be his wife.

Janak gets irritated with Ravan’s speech pregnant with pride, and asks him to prove his might first and then talk about his glory.

Offended and challenged, Ravan hastily walks towards the bow and tries lifting it like a feather. However, he gets shocked, as do others, when he fails to lift the bow. Even after several attempts, Ravan fails in his endeavour, thus becoming a laughing stock of the gathering.
