The Xiaomi Mi 11X Review; Premium features at not so premium price

The Xiaomi Mi 11X is probably the most important phone in this series as it redefines the standards set by mid-segment phones. Let's break down this review into segments to understand the Mi 11X better and why I say it is an important phone in the 11 series line-up.

Design

Gorgeous!!! That is how I would summarise the design segment in a word. But then, I would not do justice to the efforts Mi has taken while designing the 11X. The colour of the 11X we have is Celestial Silver (Mi calls it) which creates an Iridescence effect that is nothing short of awe-inspiring. The phone comes with a glossy aluminium shell with Gorilla Glass 5 for the display and the back. The display glass merges with the thin bezel and provides a seamless feel to the overall handling experience when combined with the curved edges of the rear glass. The rear glass has a matt finish but still manages to capture fingerprint smudges easily. There is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor that doubles as a power button. Mi continues to include an IR blaster that is conveniently housed, in the top speaker grill. The make of the phone is minimalistic, well-built and premium.

Display

The Mi 11X has a 6.67-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 2400 resolution and 395ppi(could have been better). The display also comes with a refresh rate of 120Hz (great for gaming), HDR10+(great for watching HDR content) and 1300 nits of peak brightness(great for outdoor use). The screen to body ratio of the display is at 85.9% but the display feels larger because of the thin chin other found in premium phones.

Specs and Performance

The Mi 11X comes powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 870G processor that is second in line only to the most powerful processor offered by Qualcomm. Both variants of the Mi 11X come with 128GB of base storage but offer a RAM option of 6GB and 8GB. The internal storage is UFS 3.1, which reduces read and write times. Apart from 5G support, the Mi 11X sports WiFi 6 and BlueTooth 5.1 technology.

The Mi 11X will handle most performance-driven games well. But if you are primarily going to use the phone as a gaming device, I would advise the 8GB variant. If as a daily driver for occasional gaming, then the 6GB variant will suffice. The phones house a decent 4520 mAh battery that will get you through the day or more depending on your usage. But if you do need to charge the phone during the day, the 33W fast charger (included in the box) will charge your phone from 0 to 100 in about 52 mins.

Camera

Xiaomi has ditched the market trend of a quad-camera setup and opted for an optimised triple camera setup. The primary sensor on the Mi 11X is a 48MP sensor from Sony with an aperture of f/1.8. The other two sensors are an 8 MP (ultrawide, f/2.2 aperture, 119˚ field of view) and 5 MP (macro, f/2.4 aperture). The selfie camera uses a 20 MP sensor with a wide field of view(extremely handy for video calls or group selfies)

The Mi 11x does not have OIS(optical image stabilization) on any of the sensors. Instead, the Mi 11X uses its advanced AI and software to provide stable shots and video footage from its camera sensors. We captured some amazing pics with the Mi 11X while testing out the camera, check them out below.

The video output is acceptable and the pictures, though not the best in terms of the details, are acceptable for most social media handles. But you want to achieve the best results from the sensors, use the promo mode to better control the output from the sensors. The results are staggering.

Verdict

Xiaomi has established itself quite well in the market in a short period. They have delivered extraordinary phones in the last two years that compete directly with premium phones of other brands but at a much lesser cost. The Mi 11X is a testimony to Xiaomi's endeavours of delivering a wholesome package at a much lesser price point. The Mi 11X is a well designed and feature-rich phone. The only thing keeping the Mi 11X from being the best phone at its price phone is the adverts in MiUI. Hopefully, Xiaomi will get rid of the adverts for good in the upcoming update.

Pricing

The Xiaomi Mi 11X starts at INR. 29,999for the 6GB/12GB variant and Rs. 31,999 for the 8GB/128GB variant. Xiaomi three colour options for the Mi 11x, Cosmic Black, Celestial Silver and Lunar White.
