We have seen many tech companies like Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Apple, etc boast about their smartphones having high screen refresh rates that provide you smooth screen action and smooth picture quality. The newly launched Apple iPhone 13 series smartphones have displays with 120 Hz refresh rate, not only iPhones but other smartphone companies also manufacture devices with such screen refresh rate.

What is a refresh rate?
The contents on your device’s display are made up of still frames which are shown in sequence at a high pace. The refresh rate of the screen is measured in hertz(Hz) and it shows the number of times each frame changes. A smartphone with 120Hz refresh rate allows the new frame to be displayed up on the screen upto 120 times per second. Smartphones with 60Hz refresh rate display the new frame up to 60 times per second.
A good refresh rate allows the phone’s display to provide smooth gaming action and also reduce the motion blur on the video, which is very common in Android phones. Games run faster and smoother on smartphones which have displays with high refresh rates especially the action games run smoothly. All the gaming phones come with a high refresh rate to make sure that the users can have a good time playing games on that device. But inorder to get full benefit of the refresh rate, the devices must have a high frame rate as well. These are the two matches which every smartphone should have.
High refresh rates result in more consumption of battery power. When you refresh your screen, more battery power is required to refresh the screen at 120 times per second. The processor's power is also required to run graphics at higher frame rate. Nowadays, smartphones with high performance processors are launched but a good battery backup is still missing in most of the mid range smartphones.
Some smartphones such as the all new Apple iPhone 13 series have an adaptive mode that allows the device to adjust the refresh rate of the screen. This means the phone will refresh the screen at 120 Hz rate when it is required, thus reducing the consumption of battery power.
