Dolby Vision gaming compatibility for Xbox series X/S consoles has finally been released by Microsoft. The gaming experience will be enhanced by Dolby Vision compatibility, which will give more vibrant colors, brighter highlights, and better contrast. For years, Microsoft has supported HDR10 as a standard, and in the near future, more than 100 next-gen HDR games with Dolby Vision will be available for Xbox Series X/S. More titles, such as Halo Infinite, will take advantage of Dolby Vision in the future. In addition to the chosen list of Xbox Series X|S optimised games, Microsoft wanted to make sure that the large library of games released in HDR or Auto HDR earlier would benefit as well.

Dolby Vision is a proprietary high-dynamic-range color format that, in certain ways, beats the more widely used (and open) HDR10 standard. Most importantly, it has dynamic information, which allows a display to change the image scene by scene as needed. In addition, Dolby Vision features a wider color spectrum and brighter highlights than HDR10.

Enabling Dolby Vision Gaming for Users

To play games in Dolby Vision, the user must have a Dolby Vision compatible television. According to Microsoft, using automatic low-latency mode (ALLM) will improve your Dolby Vision experience. ALLM, 120 Hz games, and variable refresh rate are all compatible with Dolby Vision (VRR).

Go to Settings > General > TV & display options > 4K TV information to see if your television supports Dolby Vision or not. If your television is Dolby Vision compatible, go to Settings > General > TV & display options > Video Modes > Dolby Vision for Gaming to enable it. To use the 120Hz modes with Dolby Vision, the user may need the most recent television firmware.

Enabling Dolby Vision in Game Engine

Developers can choose to integrate Dolby Vision into their game engine or use the built-in Dolby Vision technology within the Xbox developer platform. Auto HDR games aren't actual Dolby Vision games, but Microsoft claims that the Dolby Vision mapping technology on Xbox will help them display more accurate visuals on Dolby Vision TVs.

Overall, the Dolby Vision gaming experience will allow for improved color and contrast retention in the game. When opposed to HDR10, Dolby Vision provides higher attention to detail when gaming at 4K/120Hz.
