Sourav Ganguly speaks about R Ashwin's rumoured move to Delhi Capitals
The Punjab-franchise shelled out a significant INR 7.6 crores for the Tamil Nadu-born off-spinner in 2018
Former Team India skipper and current Delhi Capitals advisor Sourav Ganguly has said that the team would be ‘more than happy to welcome Ashwin in their ranks. It has been learned that KXIP is mostly to trade him ahead of the upcoming edition. Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Delhi Capitals (DC) are being presumed as the two franchises where Ashwin could be traded.
“We would be more than happy to have Ashwin if KXIP is ready to release him,” Ganguly said in Cricket Next during a promotional event in New Delhi. Ganguly joined the Delhi-based franchise only in the previous season. and alongside Ricky Ponting worked wonders for the team, by helping them to qualify for the playoffs before bowing out after the Qualifier 2.
Meanwhile, Ashwin, who is currently in West Indies for the tet series captained Kings XI Punjab in the previous two editions of Indian Premier League (IPL). The Punjab-franchise shelled out a significant INR 7.6 crores for the Tamil Nadu-born off-spinner in 2018, but unfortunately, he couldn't take the team to the playoffs inspite of making promising starts.
If Ashwin does leave KXIP, the team will once again face issues regarding who will take the leadership responsibility. Previously the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Murali Vijay, and many others have led the team. But leaving George Bailey, who captained them to the finals in 2014, none has made much of an impact. Top-order batsman KL Rahul seems to be the most likely candidate for the leadership role.
