India vs West Indies: Andre Russell ruled out of first two T20Is, Jason Mohammed named replacement
West Indies' prime all-rounder Andre Russell was on Friday ruled out of the first two T20Is against India. Jason Mohammed has been named his replacement. More details inside
West Indies’ prime all-rounder Andre Russell was on Friday ruled out of the first two T20Is against India and has been replaced by Jason Mohammed. Russell was earlier named in the 14-man squad, however, after facing some ‘discomfort’ during GT20 Canada, he opted out.
Jason, who last appeared in a T20I in April 2018, gets an opportunity to earn himself a place in the team. The 32-year-old has also earlier captained Windies in the limited-overs cricket.
"We welcome Jason Mohammed into the squad for the first two T20 matches here in Florida. He is a player with lots of experience in all three formats," said interim West Indies head coach Floyd Reifer.
"It is not easy to the fill the shoes of someone like Andre Russell, who has dominated T20 cricket all over the world and helped West Indies win the ICC T20 World Cup on two occasions.
"We believe Jason is capable of good performances and we back him to perform at this level and win games as well," he added.
The series gets underway today in Florida. Both India and West Indies spent a few days to understand the conditions. It will be the first assignment post World Cup for both these sides.
