Dean Jones on Rishabh Pant: 'He needs to learn some home truths and improve his off-side play'
Former Australia cricketer Dean Jones has advised India stumper Rishabh Pant to improve on his off-side play to succeed in international cricket
Former Australia cricketer Dean Jones has said that MS Dhoni's successor Rishabh Pant should not be getting these many opportunities simply because of the talent he possesses. He warned Pant to realize his mistakes and improve upon his game quickly to compete with the 'big boys'.
In a tweet Dean Jones wrote, "Why should Pant be any different to any other young player that has made mistakes? It's big boys cricket. I know he is young but he needs to learn some home truths and improve his off-side play."
Dean Jones reacted to Yuvraj Singh's comments when he had backed the young wicketkeeper and urged the team management not to put unnecessary pressure on the talented Delhi lad. "How they get the best out of Pant is completely based on his character. You have to understand his psychology and then work with that. If you are going to suppress him, you won't get the best out of him."
"Yes, he has been given a number of chances but how do you get the best out of him. The people monitoring him in the team - the coaches, the captain - can make a lot of difference."
The former India batsman also said that one should stop the comparison between Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni. "MS Dhoni was not made in a day. It took few years so it will take a few years for a replacement also. There is one year to go for the T20 World Cup so that is still a long time."
Currently, Rishabh Pant is donning the big gloves in MS Dhoni's absence in the shorter versions too. Although, his talent has been acknowledged by many, he has come under the scanner for throwing away his wicket playing rash shots early on in the innings.
He will be in action during the Test series against South Africa beginning on October 2nd.
