World Press Freedom Day 2017 : PM Modi supports "free and vibrant press"
'Cause independence of the media is crucial for the survival of a democracy...
"Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." - Universal Declaration Of Human Rights
Freedom of expression is an official fundamental human right and World Press Freedom Day celebrates just that. Media freedom and access to information facilitate the development objective of empowering people. Ensuring freedom of the media around the world is on top priority. Independent and free media are crucial to good governance in democracies.
Underlining the importance of the above, PM Modi took to social media to say, "It is a day to reiterate our unwavering support towards a free & vibrant press, which is vital in a democracy." A supporter of social media, the Prime Minister added, “In today’s day & age, social media has emerged as an active medium of engagement & has added more vigour to press freedom.”
The World Press Freedom Day, observed internationally, was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the 26th Session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991. The day is in honour of all the journalists who lost their lives while working on stories they’re passionate about. It also serves a reminder to those in power that the independence of the media is crucial for the survival of a democracy.
