Lingerie shopping in India is still somewhat of a 'taboo' and today, I'm here to ask why?!

Lingerie is probably the most important part of an outfit, as it plays a major role in defining shape and silhouettes. It literally has the ability to make or break your ensemble, and while the west is embracing new styles and fits, we're still awkward to go out and ask for a well-fitted bra.

Now I know that not everyone shies away from purchasing lingerie, but you can't deny that there's an awfully whole lot of women that still don't find it in them to head out to a store and ask for a sexy thong or a strapless bra.  I know this first hand because my last year in college was spent in a popular lingerie store that I worked part-time in.

During my stint at the store, I interacted with more than fifteen women on a daily basis, two or three out of which were 'bold' enough to ask me if I had what they were looking for. The rest, I'd just have to cajole and probe them to spill the beans!

Well, if you're one of those who hasn't taken lingerie shopping seriously, or hasn't found the 'need' to head out to a store and browse through some styles, let me prep you for the same.

Here is a summer lingerie guide, for the clueless Indian woman:

What is 32, 34, 36 ...?

These numbers don't have anything to do with the size of your breast but it is the size of the band of your bra.

How do I know my perfect size?

Using a measuring tape, measure around the rib cage directly under the bust. Make sure the tape is smooth across the back and level with the front. Following that, add five to the measurement you see and that is your band size.

Tip: Make sure your band size is just tight enough for you to run a finger underneath it smoothly. If it's too tight, it could cause health issues or even unwanted bulges. A loose band will not give you the right support, defeating the whole purpose of wearing a bra.

What is A, B, C, D, DD ...?

These alphabets are the actual size of your breasts, aka your cup size.

Tip:  The cups should be filled in so that there are no visible creases or gapping. If there are wrinkles, you may need a smaller cup size. On the other hand, if there is overflow at the top or even under your arms, you need to try a larger cup size.

Underwires vs non-wired bra's

Underwires

Bra's with an underwire provide the ultimate support and life, and are ideal for women with breasts that aren't as firm. A common misconception people have about underwires is that they hurt and are uncomfortable. Well, this is only true if your band size is incorrect. A bra wire should sit perfectly under your breasts, only then will it serve its purpose.

Non-Wired

Non-wired bras primarily focus on comfort and not shape. Although they provide lift and support, just as a wired bra, the effect isn't as evident and dramatic. A common favourite amongst Indians, this kind of bra serves a basic purpose, not doing adding too much value to your silhouette.

Padded vs non-padded

Padded

Padded bras are foam/sponge filled that add volume and shape to your breasts. Though it is recommended for women of a smaller and leaner size, sometimes it can work well for someone on the heavier side, giving them a rounded, lifted look.

Non-padded

Non-padded bras are ideal for people with an already larger bust size. Just make sure the cups cover enough to make you feel comfortable and secure, and the straps are a bit wider to give you that extra support.

6 basic bra types you need to know

1. Full cup bra

A full cup bra completely covers the breasts and offer the maximum support as compared to others. A popular choice amongst women with larger cup sizes, these are ideal inside regular tees and tight fitted clothing.

2. Minimiser bra

Again a popular choice amongst women with bigger breasts, the minimiser, as the name implies, is meant to give your breasts a shrunken effect. Usually giving full coverage, the minimiser bra actually fits to reduce your size by an inch or so.

3. Strapless bra

Strapless bras are often convertible (versatile) bras with detachable straps. They are especially used when you want to wear a strapless ensemble or a top that need your bra strap to be concealed.

4. Sports bra

A sports bra must give you full coverage and is meant for when you're going for a run or working out at the gym. This kind of bra allows a wide range of movement and makes you feel completely secure.

5. Plunge bra

Plunge bras are designed to enable you to wear clothes with deep necklines, without a hint of your bra. The cups join together low between the breasts and are attached with a thin centrepiece.

6. Convertible bra

Convertible bras, also known as multi-way bras, have straps that come off and hooks to reattach them in different ways. This kind of bra is worn with clothes that would otherwise show off your bra straps. Today, it is also worn as a style statement with the intention of showing it off.

Kinds of lingerie that every woman should own

Your staple round neck casual tees or cotton kurtas require basic everyday bras that are comfy and efficient.

Your gym lingerie is as important as the rest, as it is a must to have good support while working out. If you don't use a sports bra, you could end up with saggy breasts and nobody wants that!

You get the point. Sexy lacy stuff that gets you and your man in the mood for some intimacy.

An absolute necessity, every woman's closet needs to have a strapless bra that holds your breast in a firm way.

Backless clothes demand backless bra's and hence this makes it to the list. Backless bras work well with several saree blouses too, making it advisable to purchase one, just in case!

Trending lingerie this summer

Lingerie in 2017 is all about playful functionality. While sexy athleisure is a reigning trend this year, with thicker bands and no underwire.

The world of lingerie is also being dominated by sultry straps (especially the choker look!) and cut out styles this time around. So whether you're sporty or flirty, fancy or simple, there's something for everyone.

The year will also see the comeback of elegant and chic white lace lingerie - an ideal pick for newly wedded beauties and brides to be. Other colours to look out for include timeless black, burgundy, lavender blush, light coral, nudes and pink hues. If you're in the mood for some romance, feminine sets with floral embroidery and lace on the cups and brief sides will only build the sensuality quotient.

With this guide, I hope some of your lingerie queries have been answered and I also hope it inspires you to go out and enjoy some bra shopping. Don't be afraid to experiment with new styles and prints - it can be as exciting as you make it!
