Dark clouds cover the skies of the beautiful French capital yet again, as Parisians are sent into dismay.

Thursday night, a gunman killed a police officer on the city’s most iconic boulevard, the Champs-Élysées, stirring France’s worst fears of a terrorist attack.

The man was shot dead by the police as he tried to flee on foot and in the process, two other police officers and a bystander were wounded. The police were quick to block all access to the crowded thoroughfare, lined with restaurants and high-end stores, as a helicopter hovered overhead.

News of the attack spread like wildfire and sent people into a state of panic as they ran for cover. At around midnight, President François Hollande said in an address to the nation that the attack appeared to be an act of terrorism and this was confirmed as The Islamic State soon claimed responsibility in a message posted on a jihadi channel.

After thourough investigation, the gunman has now been identified from papers left in his car, but French officials are yet to release his name.
