“I'm not upset that you lied to me, I'm upset that from now on I can't believe you,” author Friedrich Nietzsche wrote.
If you are reading this article, it means that you are already suspecting. Definitely, this article is not written to comfort you. This is the first sign that your boyfriend is lying to you. Don’t doubt what you notice.
Sadly, if someone’s lies have worked in the past, it becomes a habit and the cycle repeats at regular intervals. In fact, they might even get better at it and convince you to believe what they say.
Usually, good liars have great skills in convincing people and getting them to believe their side of the story. If you feel you’ve fallen into that trap, don’t fret. Here are five ways to find out if your boyfriend is lying to you.
These signs come handy when you are making conversation with them and if you feel they tick all the boxes, it may be time for a real confrontation.
Defensive behaviour
Whenever you ask them details about certain things, either they try to change the topic or they become extremely defensive about their actions. It could show in simple things. For example, if your partner’s phone was busy for quite a while and you ask them who they were talking to, and they respond saying, “Why do you need to know every detail?” or “You can’t ever trust me, right?”
Slow response
If you ask them where they were or what they ate earlier during the day, and they take a long time to reply or keep you at least one or two minutes waiting before telling you the story, it sure means they are lying. This applies to texts too.
Non-verbal cues
The biggest red flag is when their expressions or overall behaviour doesn’t match their words. For example, if they say they will change a certain behavioural pattern that has been irking you and do nothing towards it, they don’t mean what they say.
Vague information
They seem to give you a really vague explanation of what has been happening in their life or any particular incident you ask them. Most times, people who do so feel if they leave out certain information pieces, it might not even be considered a lie. However, this is the biggest loophole that you should notice.
Body language
Notice their hands and eyes. If they move their fingers out and about and don’t make eye contact while narrating their stories, it may mean they are constantly lying to you about something. On the other hand, if they make too much eye contact, it could be a sign that they have practiced what they need to tell you and are sticking to the poker face.
Most times, lying is actually just a way to avoid conflict in a relationship. Slowly, it somehow becomes the right thing to do from their point of view. However, if you feel it is doing more harm than good, it may be time to break the bubble and talk to them.
