More than one million people across the globe die from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Mosquitoes not only spread disease causing germs from human-to-human, but they can also transmit diseases that affect dogs and horses. Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria are characterised by symptoms such as fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, irritation of skin, rashes, confusion and light sensitivity. While being affected by a mosquito borne disease is certainly scary, you can follow these easy tips to avoid them altogether.

1. Use insect repellent

The easiest way to stop mosquito infestation is by using insect repellent. Spray your home with some insect repellent or light a coil to avoid any bites. You can also use roll-on insect repellent on your clothing and ointment insect repellent on your skin whenever you go out.

2. Wear long sleeves

If you frequent areas where there are a lot of mosquitoes, consider dressing up in full sleeve shirt and pants. The protective layer of your clothing will ensure that no mosquito can come in contact with your skin. Wear cotton outfit so that you are comfortable and don’t feel hot. This is also the best way to protect kids from mosquito bites!

3. Use mosquito nets

Use a mosquito net every time you go to bed. Although putting up a net is a time consuming process, yet it is a foolproof way to avoid any mosquito bite while you are asleep. Not only mosquitoes, the net also keeps you safe from other insects such as cockroaches, flies and wasps and even small animals such as lizards and mice!

4. Stay away from stagnant water

You must not only stay away from stagnant water but also make sure that no water is collected near your home. Empty out tires, coconut shells, flower pots and ditches of water if you spot them. Mosquitoes breed in dirty, stagnant water making them a great health risk. After cleaning the area, spray some bleaching powder for complete sterilisation.

5. Grow citronella plant in your home

Citronella is a common ingredient in most mosquito repellents. This beautiful, perennial grass can be grown at home too! Citronella emits a strong aroma that masks other scents and prevents mosquitoes from being attracted to its nearby surroundings. Citronella is easy to grow and great way to avoid mosquitoes and beautify your surroundings at the same time!
