Karela for Diabetes: Here's why it is THE best juice for diabetics

Managing diabetes is a task. Diabetics are expected to follow a set diet and workout regime.  When it comes to diabetes, even the most healthy fruits and juices could set your blood sugar levels racing. Diabetes is often linked with other health complications like obesity and stroke. One needs to be aware of dos and don'ts when it comes to diabetes since a lack of awareness about diabetes can make the condition worse and even lead to an untimely death.

Diabetic patients should avoid refined carbs and include food rich in fibre in their diet. They are also advised to take a low glycemic index (GI) foods. Carbs with low GI value (55 or less) are digested, absorbed and metabolised slowly and cause a gradual rise in blood glucose. With this, diabetics should stay away from aerated and sugary drinks. Studies suggest that these drinks are full of calories and can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. However, there is one juice that can help regulate your blood sugar levels naturally. And it's the most disliked karela juice.

Here's how Karela Juice is good for diabetes

Karela or bitter gourd helps to regulate blood sugar levels in the body and makes your insulin active. And when your insulin is activated, the sugar in your body will be used adequately and won't convert into fat.

Studies also state that bitter gourd has a few compounds with anti-diabetic properties. One such compound is Charantin, which is known for its blood glucose-lowering effect. Furthermore, karela contains a compound called Polypeptide-p or p-insulin which has been shown to control diabetes naturally.

How to make Karela juice at home

Peel and slice the bitter gourd to the centre. Once you are done with the slicing, shovel the white flesh and the seeds of the vegetable. Take the bitter gourd and cut them into pieces, and soak the pieces in water for 30 minutes. Blend bitter gourd, lemon and half a teaspoon of salt in a juicer.

To reduce the bitterness of the drink, add some honey or extra lemon juice to it. It will take you a while to get accustomed to the taste of the juice, but if consumed daily, it will improve your overall health condition with time.
