High blood pressure Vs Low blood pressure: EVERYTHING that you need to know

You must have noticed that every blood pressure reading consists of two numbers or levels. They are represented as fractional number. The number on the top is your systolic blood pressure, which  is the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats. The number at the bottom is your diastolic blood pressure. It is the lowest level your blood pressure reaches as your heart relaxes between beats. Thus, the ideal blood pressure reading is 120/80. At this level we are least likely to suffer from a heart attack or a stroke.

What is High blood pressure?

If your blood pressure reading has consistently been 140/90 or more, you probably have high blood pressure or hypertension. High blood pressure puts extra strain on your heart and blood vessels and with time  increases your risk of a heart attack or stroke. High blood pressure may also cause heart and kidney disease, and is closely linked to some forms of dementia.

Symptoms of high blood pressure:

1. If you have been noticing blood in your urine for a few weeks now, it could be a symptom of high blood pressure.

2. Along with severe headaches and blurry vision, those with a high blood pressure reading are also likely to experience fatigue, chest pain and difficulty in breathing.

3. If you have high blood pressure levels, you may also experience pounding in your neck chest and ears.

Causes of high blood pressure:

1. You are at a greater risk of high blood pressure if you have a family history of it. South Asians are especially susceptible to high blood pressure.

2. Lifestyle faults such as consuming too much salt, drinking, smoking, not exercising and being overweight can also cause high blood pressure.

3. As you get older, the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle can build up and result to high blood pressure levels.

How to prevent high blood pressure:

1. Exercise regularly and avoid smoking and drinking.

2. Check the consumption of salt. Make sure that your diet is rich in fruits, vegetables and protein.

3. See a doctor regularly, especially if you have a family history of high blood pressure levels.

What is Low blood pressure?

Some people have a blood pressure level that is lower than normal. This may be good news since the lower your blood pressure is, the lower you are at a risk of stroke or heart disease. However, in a few cases, having low blood pressure can cause problems. A low blood pressure reading is having a level that is 90/60mmHg, or lower.

Cause of low blood pressure:

1. Some people naturally have low blood pressure levels. This may not be a cause of concern.

2. However you have been noticing a drop in your blood pressure levels after taking certain medications, you should consult a doctor.

Symptoms of low blood pressure:

1. People with low blood pressure may experience sudden spells of dizziness.

2. Low blood pressure is also accompanied by a drop in body temperature and clamminess of the skin.

3. Often time low blood pressure levels may lead to nausea and unconsciousness in some.

How to prevent low blood pressure:

1. Eat small portions of meals throughout the day to keep your blood pressure levels steady.

2. Drinking a caffeinated beverage after a meal helps in the prevention of low blood pressure.

3. Consume carbohydrate rich food such as rice, pasta and potatoes to stay fit.
