Diwali which is also known as the festival of lights is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm by Indians across the world every year. The five-day fiesta just around the corner. This year the festival of Diwali falls on October 27 with Dhanteras on October 25 and Narak Chaturdasi aka Choti Diwali on October 26. New Year and Bhau Bij will be celebrated on October 28 and 29 respectively.

On the pious occasion, devotees observe Lakshmi puja, decorate their houses, distribute sweets and delicacies, spend time with family and friends. Just like any other festival, during Diwali too, many of us indulge in unhealthy binge eating and pollute the environment by bursting too many crackers. It is wise to have a healthy and safe Diwali and today we have rounded off some of the best tips and tricks one can follow to celebrate Deepawali in safe and healthy manner without compromising on any fun and fare.

1. Keep a track of sugar intake, replace sugar with stevia and other alternatives

Do not fall into the sweet craving trap as the same will backfire soon. We know how difficult it is to avoid sweets during festivals, however, one can keep a track of sugar-laden food items' intake. Prepare sweets with stevia or other sugar alternatives so that you can relish delectables without any guilt or fear of weight gain or heartburn and other health issues. Also, while gifting make sure you gift your family and pals healthy foodstuff. 

2. Work it out

No festival is complete without indulgence and the same happens in Diwali. So instead of worrying about the extra calories from parties and bingeing one can take out some time to work out. Running, taking stairs over lift, jogging and cycling among others can help you to keep fats at bay.

3. Tackle air pollution: Burst green crackers and wear a mask

Bursting of crackers and Diwali go hand in hand. Instead of bursting the normal ones which can create air pollution, one can go for gree aka eco-friendly ones. If you are suffering from asthma or any other respiratory problem or have allergies then wearing a mask when outdoors is a must. 

4. Noise pollution

 Also, one should make sure that instead of noisy firecrackers, one can burst the crackers which have less noise like flowerpots and sparklers. The bursts of sounds can lead to hike in blood pressure especially among the sick and the elderly. If required one should use earplugs if the noise is unbearable.

5. Fire hazard

Make sure you burst fireworks in a wide-open space. Check the vicinity first to find if there are any flammable materials. Wear close-fitting cotton clothing while lighting. Also, make sure you wear footwear when walking in or near the fireworks area. Dispose of fireworks in a bucket of sand or water. Also, make sure to have a first aid kit handy. Include antiseptic ointment, pain-relieving gel, inhaler, bandage and cotton among others in the first aid kit.

6. Limit alcohol intake

If you are hosting Diwali parties or going to a one make sure that you do not go overboard with alcohol drinking. People suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure should make healthy food and drink choices. Also, make sure you do not drive in an intoxicated state to avoid mishaps.

7. Stay hydrated 

Staying hydrated will help to deal with excess food and drink intakes during the five-day festival. Drink required the amount of water and your systems in the body especially gut will thank you. Indigestion and acidity can be kept at bay by keeping hunger pangs at bay. Aside from water, you can also include low caloric smoothies, juices, coconut water in your diet.
