Diwali, the five-day fiesta, is being celebrated by the Hindus across the world. And along with Diwali, comes unhealthy and polluted air which can hamper our health as it negatively impacts our lungs. Change in temperature and toxic smog lead to poor air quality which again leads to breathlessness, cough, throat infection and irritation in the nasal passages among others. During this festival, as we all know, many of us burst firecrackers and the same add more pollution and it engulfs the whole city.

1. Jaggery

Jaggery or gud is packed with iron and the same is one of the vital nutrients in our body. The iron element helps our lungs to fight air pollution too. Make sure to have jaggery everyday. However, if you are diabetic then do not have it more than 2-4grams per day.

2. Vitamin C rich foods and other immunity-boosting foods

Another best way to take care of your lungs is with the intake of Vitamin C. With the help of this vitamin, one can keep the immunity in check and keep the lungs strong as air pollution affects our immunity too. Aside from Vitamin C, consumption of omega fatty acids and magnesium-rich foodstuff should also be added in your diet to have better immunity. Include lemons, orange, kiwi, garlic, yogurt, spinach, almonds and ginger among others.

3. Honey

Are you suffering from breathing issues then make sure to add honey in your diet as it cures the mucus which makes breathing very difficult in polluted areas. One can add honey in warm water and drink the concoction twice or thrice a day. You can also include it in green tea.

4. Steam and Gargling

Steam and gargling with water will help you to relieve from congestion that you may have in air passages. This will also help to sleep better too.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric holds a lot of importance in Ayurvedic medications and it has been used for medicinal purposes. One can include Turmeric in the diet by adding the same in a glass of warm milk. Start having the same and your lungs will thank you.

Aside from these home remedies, one should try and stay indoors, especially those who have asthma and lung-related problems as it can get aggravated. So, check the pollution levels and then only step out. If it's urgent then step out by wearing a face mask as it gives you protection against the major pollutants.
