Zomato Hacked: More than 17 million user records stolen
Zomato reports a massive data breach affecting millions of accounts...
Food delivery and restaurant search giant have recently reported that more than 17 million user records were stolen from its impressive database. The company said that user account information (including names, email addresses and passwords) have been unethically been thieved.
However, Zomato has declared te assurity that the hashed passwords of all the users cannot be decrypted or converted into plain text under any circumstance. The company further said that payment related information on Zomato is ‘stored separately’ in a highly secure PCI Data Security Standard (DSS) vault, further asserting that no payment information or credit card details had been stolen/leaked.
Looking forward, Zomato now plans to severely tighten its internal security measures for all user related information stored in its database. The Chief Technocrat of the company, Gunjan Patidar, assured that they are working on adding another layer of authorization for its internal teams, with the aim to avoid the possibility of any human tampering.
According to a hacker decoding website, a user by the name of 'nclay' claimed to have hacked the site and was open to selling data on a popular Dark Web marketplace. The website also published data and other evidence to prove that they weren't faking it.
It is believed that the development comes on the heels of WannaCry ransomware attack that affected 150 countries globally.
