Navratri 2019: Here's what you should do and avoid during Navratri fasting

Navratri is a festival of dancing, feasting and fasting. It's celebrated widely across the country. This 9-day festival began on 29th September, and devotees are religiously fasting since then. But people who are fasting should keep certain things in mind. They should follow some dietary precautions and avoid certain food items. Fasting is healthy and there’s no doubt about that. However, it is imperative to follow rules and avoid going overboard. Read below to find out some dos and don't that you need to follow while fasting in Navratri.

Hydrate yourself well:

You are already eating less and dehydration is not something that you would want to experience. To maintain your health, make sure that you constantly take sips of water. You can also consider liquids like coconut water, milk and fresh fruit juices which are not just fast-friendly but will also recharge you.

Avoid overeating:

Navratri calls for delicious food items, and the dishes during fasting season looks very appetizing but think twice before doing gluttony. If you don't take care of your eating habits, it would not just do away with the purpose of the fast but will also take a toll on your digestive system. Include fresh fruits in your fast, and avoid greasy, oily food that makes you feel bloated.

Reduce the consumption of sugar:

Sweets that are promptly available in the market are made with processed sugar, which is unhealthy and something you should avoid as much as you can. Try to choose healthier options like sugarcane and jaggery. These alternative options are equally tasty and won't even harm your health.

Consume healthy snacks:

When you fast, you tend to feel hungry at an odd time, and then we end up eating unhealthy food. Switch to healthy food options like makhana/ fox nuts. They are rich in vitamins and irons and will keep your waistline and cholesterol levels in place. Drinking water at regular intervals will also cut down your cravings.

Sleep well:

When you fast during festive seasons, your body goes under detox and needs plenty of rest. Hence, make sure you sleep for 7-8 hours every day. Try to relax and avoid taking stress.

Do not strain yourself:

These nine days of Navratri are filled with meal prepping, attending events and fasting. However, the body is low on energy so try not to exert and put excessive pressure on your body. Keep munching on something from time to time and rest when you can. Take care of these things and enjoy Navratri with fervour and style.
