Karwa Chauth 2019: Here’s how you can break your fast in a healthy way by consuming the right food items

Karwa Chauth is a festival celebrated by the Hindus in the cooler months of the year. It marks as a day of celebration, fasting and feasting and mostly observed in the northern regions of the country where married women fast without even drinking a drop of water or eating a morsel of food. This fast is observed to wish for a long and healthy life of their spouses. Usually, women celebrate this festival but now that the times are changing, a lot of men also observe it for a longer life of their wives.

As per the Hindu culture, a pre-dawn meal is consumed followed by a ‘nirjal’ fast. The fast is broken only after seeing the sight of the moon. Well, since the body goes through an entire day without a drop of water, it is important to break the fast right and in a healthy way. So here we have some tips and tricks you can follow to break the fast right and in a healthy way.

1. Drink lots of water before consuming anything

If you start hogging on food the minute you break the fast, there is a great chance that you will have an upset stomach. When you break the fast, start by drinking lots of water because the body has been deprived of it throughout the day. It will hydrate the already dehydrated body while also prepping the stomach for the food it is about to eat.

2. Avoid heavy seasoning

We understand that it is a day of celebration and feasts. However, avoid seasoning your food too much and absolutely stay away from spicy items. Eating all of it will affect the already empty stomach by causing acidity and vomiting.

3. Eat at intervals

Gulping down the food after a fast will be a very bad idea. Start by drinking water and eat during intervals to avoid any kind of problems that the stomach can face.

4. Avoid rice and other complex carbs

Complex carbohydrates like rice can be difficult to digest after a long day of not eating anything. As an addition to that, since the fast is broken at night, there is too less movement the body has making it difficult on the digestive system to process everything. Choose food items like fruits, juices, grains and lentils.
