Popeye’s obsession with spinach piqued the curiosity of most youngsters. Well, it turns out the superfood is packed with nutrients that make it a healthier option than most of us thought! Loaded with nutrients and antioxidants, spinach can benefit eye health, reduce oxidative stress, help prevent cancer and reduce blood pressure levels.

With fibre, protein and 91 per cent water present in it, spinach is easily available and can be bought canned or fresh and eat it cooked or raw. A rich source of Vitamin K, it is proven to increase bone density and can even prevent fractures. The magnesium content in spinach is an added advantage as it helps the colon contract, helps ease constipation and draws in water to get rid of the waste through your system.

“Spinach, an excellent superfood, if eaten daily helps strengthen bones to fight against injury. It also protects against high blood pressure and various heart diseases,” Sonia Bakshi, the founder of DtF says, adding, “People who eat spinach regularly have glowing skin that produces enough collagen and retains moisture keeping them wrinkle free for a long time.”

“If you are prone to digestive issues or constipation, a bowl of spinach is your answer to this problem. What’s more, if you are struggling to lose weight, add half a bowl of cooked spinach to your diet daily and see how easily you cut down your flab,” Bakshi also says.

According to the American Institute of Cancer Research, foods that have a good amount of carotenoids can help prevent cancers of the mouth, pharynx, and larynx. They may even be able to slow the spread of breast cancer, lung cancer, stomach cancer, and skin cancer.

Like many other leafy green vegetables, it also has several antioxidants essential for normal skin cell development that help maintain a healthy skin tone.
