Peda, barfi and motichoor ke laddoos are famous throughout the world as delectable Indian desserts. However, there are desserts from states in India which you may or may not have tasted, that are so delicious that you will wonder why you hadn't discovered them before.
Each state in India has its own distinct taste, which can be deciphered from the local food. In the following list are the names of one best dessert from all the 29 states of India, you might find your present or next favourite here!
Qubani ka Meetha-Andhra Pradesh
Qubani ka Meetha is made from dry apricots which originated in Hyderabad. It is made with boiling apricots in a syrup and then garnishing with almonds, apricot kernels or malai.
Narikol'or Laddoo- Assam
This dish is soft and tender coconut rolled into balls. It is especially seen a lot around Bihu, a very famous festival in Assam.
Thekua- Bihar
Thekua is a dry sweet made with wheat flour, chashni and ghee. It is fried and can be stored for many days. It is a revered prasad (holy offering) during the Chhat Puja as well.
Khapse- Arunachal Pradesh
Khapse is a sweet biscuit that is prepared during the Tibetan/ Sherpa new year. The dough is made with flour, eggs, sugar and butter and then made into different interesting shape.
Dehrori- Chhattisgarh
Dehrori is a succulent festive dessert usually prepared on Diwali Eve in Chhattisgarh. It consists of fried rice dumplings dipped in sugar syrup and garnished with nuts.
Bebinca- Goa
Bebinca is a type of pudding and traditional Indo-Portuguese dessert. Traditionally, it has seven layers and the main ingredients are flour, sugar, ghee, egg yolk and coconut milk.
Basundi- Gujarat
Basundi is basically sweetened condensed milk by boiling it on low heat until it is reduced to half. It is even made in different flavours on festivals such as Kali Chaudas Bhaubeej.
Aloo ka Halwa- Haryana
Made during festivals like Ekadashi, Aloo ka Halwa is made of boiled and mashed potatoes along with pure ghee which adds to its flavour and aroma.
Dabbroo- Himachal Pradesh
Dabbroos are sweet pancakes made using wheat, ghee and milk. They are cooked as snacks as well as special desserts for occasions.
Shufta- Jammu and Kashmir
A classic Kashmiri dish, it is made of lots of dry fruits and sugar. It is that one dessert which doesn't have lots of calories or fats.
Malpua- Jharkhand
Malpua, with all its variations and use of different ingredients, is a popular dish famous all over India. However, the best is still found in Jharkhand.
Mysore Pak- Karnataka
Mysore Pak locally known as Mysuru Paaka is an Indian sweet prepared with generous amounts of ghee, sugar, gram, flour and often cardamom.
Vettu Cake- Kerala
Apart from a dessert, Vettu Cake is also a snack often found in tea shops to relish with chai. The recipe is also very easy, making it an almost daily item in households of Kerala.
Mawa Bati- Madhya Pradesh
Mawa Bati is a rich sweet made by stuffing a mawa based dough with a rich mixture of nuts and mawa and deep frying the delicate, stuffed balls.
Puran Poli- Maharashtra
Made from chana dal or split yellow gram, jaggery, cardamom, ghee and water, Puran Poli is one of the favourite desserts of Maharashtra.
Madhurjan Thonbga- Manipur
This dessert comprises of fried chickpea dumplings immersed in sweetened milk. It is a flavourful dessert right from the eastern part of the country.
Pukhlein- Meghalaya
A very simple yet toothsome dessert, pukhlein is made with bread and jaggery. Again, it is a dessert and snack for all occassions.
Chhangban Leh Kurtai- Mizoram
Leh Kurtai is a dumpling or pudding made of rice flour boiled in a leaf. It can also be extremely healthy along with being yummy.
Nap Naang- Nagaland
Nap Naang originating from this hilly area is simply pudding made of black rice. It is sticky, unique and a gem of a dessert from this little state.
Chenna Poda- Odisha
Chenna Poda is a cheese dessert, often even known as Indian cheesecake. It is made of homemade fresh cheese, sugar and nuts and is then baked for several hours until brown.
Amritsari Jalebi- Punjab
Punjab is right on top of the list for all the mouth watering desserts it has given us including lassi, gajar ka halwa and kulfi, but this bright yellow jalebi is still the best among all.
Ghewar- Rajasthan
A sweet dish traditionally associated with the Teej festival, it is a disc-shaped sweet cake made with flour and soaked in sugar syrup.
Sael Roti- Sikkim
Sael Roti is a sweet, ring shaped rice bread or doughnut which is usually homemade, cooked in pure oil or ghee.
Paal Poli-Tamil Nadu
Paal poli is basically small puris soaked in milk. It can also be made using rawa and adding other assortments and ingredients according to taste preferences.
Sunnundallu- Telangana
Sunnundallu is the famous laddoo from the South. Ground sugar, cardamom and seeds and ghee are mixed well with a handful of butter to make this sweet dish.
Awan Bangwi- Tripura
Exclusive only to Tripura, Awan Bangwi has a taste different from other desserts. It is made of sticky rice, cashews sauteed in ghee, raisins and put in cones of banana leaves.
Baalushahi- Uttar Pradesh
Baalushahi is said to be similar to a glazed doughnut in terms of preparation but differs in texture and taste. They are rich with butter, ghee and sweet syrup.
Bal Mithai- Uttarakhand
Bal Mithai is a brown, chocolate like fudge made with roasted khoya and coated with white sugar balls. It is also of religious importance in the state.
Mishti Doi- West Bengal
West Bengal is undoubtedly the land of desserts. We have rasgulla and a number of other desserts from this wonderful state but Mishti Doi is the one that has won hearts all over the country!
