Gucci model protests against the label & holds 'Mental Health Is Not Fashion' sign at Milan Fashion Week 2020

A model - Ayesha Tan-Jones and other models like her were all dressed up in white outfits, jumpsuits in particular, for the Gucci show at Milan Fashion Week. Some of these outfits resembled strait jackets. The model took to her instagram to post about how the jackets symbolised a "cruel time in medicine when mental illness was not understood," in her Instagram post where she went on to call the use of Gucci's imagery extremely hurtful and insensitive since "people's rights and liberties were taken away from them," while patients were abused and tortured in institutions.
After the backlash received from the model, Gucci said that the designs were meant to represent "how through fashion, power is exercised over life, to eliminate self-expression".
On Monday, the model made another announcement that she and some other models were donating a portion of the fees they received from Gucci, to mental health charities.
In further response to this, Gucci said that the jackets were only meant as an antidote to the colouful designs. "These clothes were a statement for the fashion show and will not be sold," a representative of the brand said.
This incident comes just months after the brand recalled a jumper for how much it resembled a blackface minstrel. Again, in May, Gucci was accused of cultural appropriation for creating a headpiece that strongly resembled a Sikh turban and therefore received criticism from the US-based Sikh coalition.
