Gigi Hadid wants to make changes in the Copyrights Law based on the controversy around her Instagram account
There was a controversey surrounding Hadid's account when she posted a paparazzi picture of herself. She said she could post the pictures because she smiled in them.
A copyright infringement lawsuit was filed against supermodel Gigi Hadid back in January when she posted an image belonging to an agency Xclusive-Lee. The posting of this image violates the company's right.
Hadid's legal team dismissed the filing and asserted that her posting the image constituted fair use as she contributed to the photo by being part of it, flashing a smile and her outfit. Gigi's memorandum reported that, "because Ms. hadid posed for the camera and thus herself contributed many of the elements that the copyright law seeks to protect."
Hadid's team also says that she cropped the image when she posted it emphasising her "contribution" to the photograph. The agency's lawsuit challenges the prior idea of Hadid's contribution since ideally, photographers have a full copyright when they capture an image in public.
This ongoing case will seriously impact how celebrities treat paparazzi shot photos of themselves. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna, Beyonce, specifically post photos they own so that fans can repost their images without any agency claiming ownership of the images and taking down accounts.
Khloe Kardashian was also once reportedly sued by an agency for posting a paparazzi shot of herself. A similar lawsuit is trying to bring down Gigi Hadid who is fighting back rigorously with her team of lawyers.
Gigi Hadid has since taken down the photograph from her Instagram account but is a picture of Hadid standing in the street and smiling in a stylish denim outfit.
