Kangana Ranaut as Julia in Rangoon has managed to mesmerise us with her acting skills and the character she portrays is unlike any other except for Fearless Nadia, from whom inspiration was taken.

We all remember her as Hunterwali - with a whip, but her journey is not known by all. Born as Mary Ann Evans in Perth, her family moved to Mumbai (Bombay at the time) in 1913. Her father was a part of the British Army but unfortunately died during World War I.

She wanted to be a part of the movies as it fascinated her and in order to lose weight, she joined a dance class. It was the dance teacher who convinced her to change her name to a more movie-star and glamorous one and that is how Nadia came about. She was initially a part of a theatre group before she was introduced to Hindi movies by Jamshed Wadia.

During one of the movies, Nadia was asked by her future husband - Homi Wadia (Jamshed's younger brother) to carry a man fireman's style. She did so with ease and hence did stunts which at that time seemed impossible to be performed by a woman. With the stunts, also came the element of sexiness which made Nadia an even more popular star with the public.

Watch this throwback video to hear more from Nadia herself on her incredible journey:

Nadia, unfortunately, passed away in 1996 at the age of 88 but her legacy will live on forever.
