Golmaal Again Movie Review: Ajay Devgn and Co. is uproarious but too long to bear after all

There's no harm in watching films which serve no social purpose. And once in a while you might spare some laughs for them, too. Golmaal Again aka Golmaal 4, by miles, doesn't even match up to the laughter quotient of the first film in the franchise. Yes, it's amateurish but time and again,director Rohit Shetty has made something click for us. Except not this time. Over its run time, Golmaal Again feels dated. It's almost like you have watched it before and you start to see its funny farce peel off towards the later half of the film.
Don't blame Rohit Shetty because he has done to the best of his ability what he knows well. But it's pretty much not his fault that the audience he was catering to all along has seen a paradigm shift in its mentality. Overdone and overplotted feels heavy for most, which can be indicated in the slip in the box office moolah this year in Bollywood.
So, there are the boys - Ajay Devgn, Tusshar Kapoor, Arshad Warsi, Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Kemmu, bromancing like pros (a habit they've developed over the years). The script obviously allows Ajay Devgn to take centerstage but the side characters never squirm into fringe ones, often providing more laughs than the main man. What is utterly baffling here is the presence of the versatile Tabu. Why so?
Well, the golden theory is that good actors seldom do a bad job, even if you place them as a prop in a bad movie. The actress never lets you feel she is miscast, settling for being a narrator, though it was wicked to make her take digs at her own films. Everyone should be allowed overacting and Tabu hasn't done it since her Hum Saath Saath Hai days. Parineeti Chopra's big twisty subplot is one you can spot from a mile. The baddies - Neil Nitin Mukesh and Prakash Raj are cardboard figurines but the actors lend some deft to the wafer thin character plots.
Rohit takes us through a frivolous backstory - six kids from Jamnadas Orphanage spend a happy and cheery childhood together, until they're separated. They meet again in rather bizarre circumstances.
What are the women up to in Golmaal Again? Well, Tabu plays Anna, a librarian who is a pro at paranormal activities. She plays a perfect mother figure to the boys and it's hard to make sense as to why she agreed to do such a flimsy part. What's Parineeti Chopra up to? Well, that's a plot spoiler but if you have seen a sizeable number of Hindi films, you know where it's headed.
An hour into the film, you find out that besides the haha-heehee, there's serious business happening. A death and its revenge become the driving force. But it's hard to focus on what is happening when there's Johnny Lever tickling your funny bones. To Rohit's credit, it's the first time a film from this franchise backs on a real storyline.
