Brooklyn Nine Nine is an American sitcom. The rest of the cast features Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz, Terry Crews as Terry Jeffords, Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago, Joe Lo Truglio as Charles Boyle, Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti, Dirk Blocker as Michael Hitchcock and Joel McKinnon Miller as Norm Scully. The series premiered on Fox on September 17, 2013, where it aired its first five seasons before moving to NBC beginning with season six. Brooklyn Nine Nine will air its season 7 in January 2020.

A cold open aka teaser sequence is a narrative tactic used in television and films. It is the technique of jumping directly into a story at the beginning of the show before the title sequence or opening credits are shown. Brooklyn Nine Nine never fails to amaze us with its cold opens. Till the time we wait for season 7 to bring out new cold opens, here are the best 5 cold opens from the series:

1] Boyle Bingo

This cold open happens during the Thanksgiving episode of season 1. The squad is at the Precinct playing Boyle Bingo. The episode starts with Boyle entering the precinct wishing everyone ‘Happy Turkey Day.’ However, everyone is prepared with Boyle Bingo: Thanksgiving edition. They mark off a bunch of things Boyle does on Thanksgiving much to his irritation.

2] Holt eats a marshmallow

In the episode 7 of season 4, in which the squad is seen doing impressions of how Holt might react to eating a marshmallow for the first time in Holt's voice.

Charles does an impression that no one found believable. Holt shows up to behave exactly the Charles did the impression, prompting Boyle to victoriously yell ‘I knew it!’

3] Amy’s gift to Holt

Amy’s several tries to give Holt gifts have failed. So, she puts a gift into Holt’s cabin, unmarked package and explains Jake her plan. Jake does a hilarious recap for Amy to hopefully understand what she did. He says, “So just to recap, you left an unmarked package on a police captain’s desk on a random Monday, with a suspicious message written on it that looked like it was scrawled by a crazy person.” However, Amy yet doesn’t understand how her ‘gift’ might be interpreted by Captain until Holt rushes out of his office yelling, ‘Bomb! There is a bomb!’ This is the 10th episode of season 3.

4] HOT DAMN!

This cold open is from season 2 episode 6. The episode starts with Jake telling the squad that Amy Santiago is officially late for the first time. Everyone goes on to give their theory of why she could be late. Holt also joins the fun pitching the theory that she must be standing in the line of the bank. Seconds later, Amy rushes in the precinct and it turns out that there was actually a problem at the bank. To which, Holt yells ‘HOT DAMN!’

5] I want it that way

This cold open is literally one of everyone’s favourite. This was at the beginning of episode 17 of season 5. During the suspect line up, Jake asks the suspects to sing ‘I Want It That Way’ by Backstreet Boys, and when the chorus comes he decides to sing along getting carried away in the process. It wasn’t until the witness yelled “It was number five. Number five killed my brother.” Jake’s reaction to it was: “Oh my God, I forgot about that part.”

Everyone is certainly awaiting for the season 7 of the series to air. Here is a bonus fun fact: The ‘Nine Nine’ chant that the squad does was actually done off camera by Terry Crews to motivate the actors to do the scene whenever they were tired or it was hard scene. It got adapted on-screen as everyone enjoyed it a lot. It was revealed by Melissa Fumero on Twitter.

“Fun fact: @terrycrews was the first to start yelling NINE NINE! on set. Usually on Monday early mornings or on a late night shoot to pump us up. Then, they started writing it into the show. He is our cheerleader and we love him for it!” - Melissa Fumero on Twitter.
