Sultan, Dangal, M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story, Pink & others: Here's a list of the films which stormed the box office in 2016!

Bollywood, this year, came up with some really great content which got the critics and viewers talking about the films. From Aamir Khan's Dangal to Salman Khan's Sultan, there were movies which dominated the box office throughout the year and were hugely appreciated by the masses. With Aamir Khan's Dangal hitting the screens on December 23, the Indian box office has been set on fire. Here's a list of the films which ruled the box office in 2016!

Sultan 

With the stupendous success of Sultan, Salman Khan has once again proved that he is the undisputed king of the box office. Salman's Sultan still continues to be at the top of the box office chart. Based on wrestling, Sultan, which also stars Anushka Sharma, became the third Bollywood movie to have crossed INR 300 crores at the Indian box office. It is regarded as one of Salman's best films. It was unstoppable at the ticket windows and cash counter were ringing in for more than a month. 

Dangal 

Finally, the much-awaited film of the year has hit the screens and viewers are all in praises for Aamir Khan's Dangal. Be it Aamir, Sakshi Tanwar, Fatima Sana Shaikh or Sanya Malhotra, performances in the film kept everyone on the edge-of-their seat. Not just the acting part, but the direction by Nitesh Tiwari has made it one of the best films of the year 2016. The film has certainly proved the point that - Is Desh Ki Choriyaan, Chorro se Kam nahi hai! The film traces the journey of Mahavir Phogat and his daughter Geeta and Babita. Dangal has raked in INR 155.53 crores at the Indian box office market in just five days of its release and is still continuing its dream run. It'll be interesting to see whether Dangal beats Sultan or not! Let's wait and watch.

Rustom 

Akshay Kumar's Rustom, based on the sensational KM Nanavati case, took the box office by storm. The case of Nanavati had left the whole nation into a tizzy and Akshay Kumar stepping into the shoes of the navy commander made everyone just go gaga over the Khiladi kumar. With films like Rustom and Airlift, Akshay even got the name of modern age Bharat Kumar. The film collected INR 124 crores in its successful run at the box office. 

Airlift

Airlift is not much behind than Rustom in terms of box office numbers. The film has minted INR 123 crores and with its patriotic theme, Airlift got all the attention from the viewers and the critics. Akshay's Airlift is the story of the biggest-ever human evacuation in the history of mankind. Directed by Raja Menon, the film is about those 1,70,000 Indians stranded in Kuwait when Saddam Hussein invaded the country in 1990, and kick-started the Gulf War. Not just the content, Akshay and Nimrat Kaur's realistic portrayals make you bow down in front of them!

M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story

M.S. Dhoni - The Untold Story is undoubtedly one of the most-talked-about films of 2016. Based on the MS Dhoni's life, the film already raised the curiousity bars of the cricket fans even before the release. The film stars Sushant Singh Rajput in the lead role and the actor has proved his mettle by the extraordinary efforts he had put in to show the cricketer onscreen. Directed by Neeraj Pandey, the film earned INR 119 crores at the box office and fans were all and all about Sushant's performance in the film. What do you think?

Housefull 3

The high-on-comedy and light-hearted film tickled the funny bone of the viewers and they did burst out in laughter after seeing the sequences in Sajid Farhad's film. The film went on to gross INR 108 crores at the box office and fans appreciated the comic timing of the lead actors - Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh and Abhishek Bachchan. It was indeed a roller-coaster ride! 

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil garnered all the attention for mainly two reasons - firstly, the oh-so-hot chemistry between Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ranbir Kapoor & secondly, the film came under the radar of being banned under the wake of the Uri Attacks and ADHM had Fawad Khan in a pivotal role. But, even though the film was surrounded by all kind of controversies, the film created waves at the Indian box office market and earned INR 106 crores. Added advantage for the film was its songs and we're sure that you still listen to the title track by Arijit Singh!

Baaghi

Shraddha Kapoor and Tiger Shroff's Baaghi also made it to the list of the highest grossing films of 2016. They won laurels from the audiences for their performance in the film. Despite receiving mixed reviews by the critics, the film collected INR 76 crores at the box office. What caught the viewer's attention the most was jaw-dropping high octane action sequences in the film. Interestingly, not just Tiger but Shraddha also had to undergo an extensive training for Baaghi and it clearly reflects through their power-packed performances. 

Neerja

This list is incomplete without mentioning Sonam Kapoor's Neerja. Based on the life of Neerja Bhanot, the youngest recipient of India's highest bravery award - the Ashok Chakra - the film made every one emotional and touched the soul of the nation. Both viewers and fans appreciated Sonam's performance in the film. Neerja turned out to be one of the most successful films of 2016 in terms of collections as the film earned way more than its budget. It raked in INR 71 crores at the Indian box office market.  

Kapoor & Sons

Shakun Batra's Kapoor And Sons, the tale of a dysfunctional family, was backed by the powerful performances by Alia Bhatt, Fawad Khan, Sidharth Malhotra, Rishi Kapoor, Ratna Pathak and Rajat Kapoor. The film offers everything from emotions to family drama, romance, fun and all that, an entertainer should have. Kapoor & Sons also got attention for Fawad's character of a homosexual in the film. Talking about the numbers, the film earned INR 69 crores at the box office. 

Pink

One of the most acclaimed courtroom drama of Bollywood, Pink was declared hit as soon as it got released, all the credits to hard-hitting performances by Amitabh Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu, Kriti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang. The dialogue delivery by Big B stunned everyone and the film has directly attacked the feudal mindset of the majority of our population. The film earned INR 65 crores at the box office in its successful run.  

Dear Zindagi

Dear Zindagi, which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt, was directed by English Vinglish's Gauri Shinde. Alia has been lauded for her portrayal of a complicated young cinematographer Kaira in Dear Zindagi. Shah Rukh Khan has played a mature character, that of a therapist Dr Jehangir Khan, and he has been critically appreciated as well. Dear Zindagi collected INR 61.25 crores at the box office. 

Udta Punjab

Udta Punjab revolves around drug abuse in the north Indian State of Punjab and how the youth there have succumbed to illicit substances. The film had won rave reviews from critics. The performances of Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt became the talking point as soon as the film hit the theatres. The Abhishek Chaubey directorial was even a winner at the box office because the film earned more than its expectations. The film was in news as CBFC had given 90 cuts, but Udta Punjab despite all the issues collected INR 59.61 crores in the Indian box office market. 

The aforementioned films were surely box office hits of 2016, but the special mention goes to Fan (INR 84.03 crores) and Shivaay (INR 84.83 crores) because the films were appreciated for the performances and fared decently at the box office.
